Calories Burned Doing Household Chores #HealthAndFitness

I spend a lot of time trying to find easy ways to get my daily workout in. After a pretty strenuous day in the yard, with sweat pouring and all, I realized ... you can burn some serious calories doing yard and house work! But how many!?

So I did some research, and found a couple of sites that helped me get a pretty good idea of how great a workout housework can be! The calories can add up quickly, and you can get a great workout around the house, meeting (or even surpassing) those at the gym!

* NOTE: The caloric examples below are for the average 5'9", 150lb. man in his mid 20's. You can use the Calorie Burn Calculator at http://www.healthstatus.com/calculate/cbc for help figuring out your personal numbers.

Yard Work
Yard work is some of the most labor intensive you can do. Doing muscle toning and strengthening tasks, like digging and raking the leaves, not only burn lots of calories but can help tone muscles in your arms and legs.
  • 30 minutes of digging in your yard will burn about 126 calories, the same amount burned by 18 minutes of low impact aerobics; and surprisingly, over 32 minutes of light weight training. Digging tones the muscles of your calves, thighs, arms and shoulders. If you do it vigorously enough and continue the activity for 20 minutes or more, you can raise your heart rate and strengthen your cardiovascular system.
  • Washing your car works your arms and abdominal. For every 30 minutes of car washing, you'll burn 153 calories; which is equivalent to 17 minutes of Zumba!
  • Weeding for 30 minutes burns anywhere between 184 to 225 calories ... pretty close to the same as running 5mph for just over 20 minutes. Weeding tones your thighs and buttocks. Just be careful to bend with your legs while keeping your spine straight, or you could hurt your back.
  • Raking leaves for 30 minutes burns 135 calories. The resistance offered by the leaves makes this chore a type of light weight training, which it far exceeds calorie burning, by 15% . Raking leaves tones all the major muscle groups in your body.

Indoor Chores
And let's not forget our inside chores! Everything from mopping to washing dishes offers a calorie burning benefit! Here's some tips on indoor workouts, you didn't realize you were doing:
  • Scrubbing the bath for 30 minutes burns 200 calories. Removing that stubborn soap scum from your tiles is a great way to tone the muscles of your arms and shoulders.
  • Carrying shopping bags for 15 minutes burns 55-90 calories, and depending on how heavy the bags are. Distribute the weight evenly on each hand, or swap back and forth at regular intervals. Carrying too much weight on one side won't just overdevelop those muscles, it could injure your spine.
  • Cleaning windows for 30 minutes burns 112 calories, the same number used in 20 minutes of power yoga (about one-third the length of a typical power yoga class).
  • Loading the dishwasher for 15 minutes burns about 30-35 calories, which is less than the 77 calories burned when washing them by hand.
  • Mopping for 30 minutes burns about 153 calories, just under what you'd burn in doing pushups for the same amount of time!
  • Ironing for 30 minutes burns about 77 calories and tones the muscles of the upper body. Stand up straight at the ironing board and press down firmly. Switch hands periodically so you don't overdevelop one arm.

Other Calorie Burners
Here are some other activities that burn surprising amounts of calories:
  • Climbing stairs for 30 minutes, burns about 274 calories
  • Painting your house for 30 minutes, burns about 171 calories
  • Showering and toweling off for 30 minutes burns about 144 calories

Willie Stylez Weight Loss => What makes me lose weight!?

Weightlosscollage_small

I have been asked by many people... What is Willie Stylez doing to lose weight!?

What Does Stylez Think?

Well, to help with the weight loss, I'm mainly sticking to a few healthy staples. I believe these 5 things are the core of my weight loss success and may work for others as well. So here is the list.

  1. Eat 4 to 5 times per day (2 meals, 3 healthy snacks)
    • the biggest mistake overweight people make is thinking if they only eat once or twice a day they will lose weight. On the contrary, that is what makes you gain weight! If you starve your body, it will absorb everything you put in your mouth, literally!
    • but eating 4 to 6 times per day, of course smaller portions, will make your body get into a metabolizing mode, where it will expel more waste in anticipation of more food to come. You have to train your body to expect more food every few hours for it to burn off the calories versus absorbing the calories as fat.
  2. Excluding sugar, bread, high carb foods
    • Personally, and for some people, carbs and sugar are my biggest downfall for weight
    • excluding carbs and sugar from my diet immediately gives my body the ability to burn calories and lose weight
    • this doesn't work for everyone but it's definitely worth the try
  3. Drinking 8-12 cups (8oz each) of water per day. Also eliminating all other soft drinks (except occasional unsweetened or sugar free sweetner teas)
    • this is another instance, like the eating food often, where your body retains when it thinks you are going to starve it. If you don't drink water enough, your body is going to retain the liquids you do take in. And most of those would be juice and pop, and that is all filled with sugar and high calories! Thus those calories will turn to fat!
    • If you drink enough water, your body will be able to expel more water in anticipation of more water to come
    • Give it a try, start drinking 8 to 12 cups and see how much weight you will lose in 7 to 10 days! You'd be amazed!
  4. Workout 2 to 3 times per week, especially on cheat days
    • Of course, when you are trying to lose weight, you can't avoid working out! You really should workout or get involved in a physical activity no matter what to live a healthy lifestyle. But when you are looking to drop the pounds, nothing better than good old fashion workout!
    • I currently do a lot of aerobics (high-impact power walking) and light weight training
    • Remember, you don't need a gym membership or a lot of fancy equipment. If you have a DVD player or Comcast On-Demand, there are plenty of workout videos out there to get you started!
    • And again, no matter what your health level, physical activity is GREAT for everyone's health. Get out and play a sport, run, play with the kids, whatever... JUST MOVE!
  5. Limit cheat days to 1 per week. Gives me a chance to enjoy foods I like but normally restricted from
    • And finally, don't be afraid to have a day where you can just relax. No calorie counting, no menu watching, etc. Just enjoy foods you normally would have to restrict yourself from.
    • Now, don't go crazy, a meal or two is ok. But try to stick to the diet the rest of the day! ;-)
    • And it's BEST to workout on planned, and especially unplanned, cheat days. It may make the difference between feeling bad for breaking the diet, and feeling really bad for having gained a pound or two!

With these 5 core staples of weight-loss, you too may be able to see your results! I hope it helps someone else. And, of course, adjust for what's best for your lifestyle and weight-loss goal. And PLEASE KEEP IN MIND... not all programs work for EVERYONE! There is NO MAGIC PILL, or single regiment that works for everyone! Everyone's body is different and everyone has to find what works best for their own body!

That is what Stylez thinks. Any further questions? Leave them in the comments!

Willie Stylez Weight Loss => 40 Down, 45 To Go! #LetsGetIt

Weighthistory_03-02-2012

So What Does Stylez Think?

Yesterday, I stepped on the scale... I had been doing fairly well with the diet, so I wasn't worried... and there it was...

285

I probably haven't been sub-290lbs since 2008-09 when I first went to the Bahamas! I have been doing pretty well on this second attempt in 2 years to get back down to my goal weight of 240lbs! I have lost 40lbs since December 2011 and am determined to keep it off. I am not as aggressive as I was 8 years ago when I was down to goal. Or even 4 years ago when I hit 278 and rebounded! But I think the method I am using now will promote a healthier and less stressful eating/exercise lifestyle that I can maintain into old age! That's the key right!? Well, 45lbs to go! I'm ready... I'm willing... LETS GET IT!

That is what Stylez thinks! What is your health goal? Feel free to comment!
